A young psychiatrist visits Wisely (衛斯理) carrying four mirrors, asking for help solving a mystery. Wisely remains aloof, so his wife Pao Su (白素) steps in and gets involved in a murder case. Meanwhile, a Japanese Go master suddenly goes mad, and the writer who interviewed him is also locked up in a mental hospital. Mysterious forces seem to connect all these events through an invisible thread.
