Jewel

Set in the piney woods of Mississippi in the 1940s, Jewel is the story of Jewel Hilburn, a woman whose sixth child, Brenda Kay, is born with Down syndrome. The novel follows Jewel's fierce determination to give her daughter the best possible life, despite the challenges of poverty, an unsympathetic husband, and a society that often misunderstands her child's condition.
