The Deep End of the Ocean is the story of the Cappadora family. It begins at a high school reunion in 1988, where Beth Cappadora brings her three children. Her two-year-old son Ben goes missing from the hotel lobby. The novel follows the family over the next decade as they grapple with the disappearance, and the eventual return of Ben when he is found living nearby, having been raised by a different family—a situation that brings its own complex challenges.
